A 60-70V battery will get you farther, but is more expensive to fix or replace than a 42V battery.

ShanghaiSolved

The question is, though, how to choose. They're virtually all 48V, 14-20Ah models that go 50-70km per charge. Anyhoo, the bike is bought and this is what I learned from the experience:

Carrefour: Has a good selection of middle-of-the-road bikes that are "good enough" for 90% of buyers. They outsource sales and repairs to a random guy who can get you a better battery, make any modifications, and recommend a lock/helmet/etc.

Small, greasy neighborhood shops: Have about the same selection as Carrefour, plus some really cheap in-all-senses bikes. They do repairs, replacements, mods, etc, and will develop a relationship with you (TIC). You can bargain pretty hard here.

Specialty shops: they exist, but don't last long. They sell expensive bikes mostly to expats, but have more interesting bikes. I've heard of these but didn't visit any during the course of my purchase.

Anything else: I couldn't find any other options for buying e-bikes. No bike-emporium or good online store. I hear the best brands are Yamaha and Giant, but I never ran across them and I'm curious where they are sold. Maybe I missed something big?

Things to consider:
- The battery size (more Ah is better, 48V is standard)
- The battery weight (how easy to get out / put in, and carry; try it)
- The size of the seat (comfort, how many people)
- How it handles (a test drive is a must; ask!)
- What it comes with (ask)
- Size of the bike
- Pedals (help save electricity, extend your range)

Off to a meeting, maybe more later.
